To kick off the upcoming 2021-2022 school year, Kendall Whittier Main Street and San Miguel Middle School have partnered to get brand new school supplies to San Miguel students.

San Miguel School is dedicated to helping children from challenging environments, regardless of race, nationality or religion, to achieve academic and personal success. The San Miguel school day and academic year are structured to give students grades 6, 7 and 8, a world of opportunities to learn and thrive. Many students arrive two or more years behind academically.

San Miguel is an independent, gratuitous school, meaning 95 percent of the operating funds come from donations, grants and fundraising. Parents provide a modest “copay” for their child’s education and contribute to the school by giving their time and talent.

“It seems small to most people, but having my very own school supplies that I never had to borrow gave me a huge sense of security when I was a student, and that’s what I’m hoping these students will have come Aug. 9,” said Sydney Alison, KWMS Community Engagement Coordinator. “If you’re able to donate even just one item, I guarantee you’ll make a difference in a student’s educational experience at San Miguel.”

You can also shop at Eleanor’s Bookshop and donate books directly to San Miguel students.

The drive is from July 14 to Aug. 6. Needed items include:

⁃ Backpacks

⁃ Pencils (#2 and colored)

⁃ Pens

⁃ Spiraled notebooks

⁃ Pencil bags & sharpeners

⁃ Kleenex tissues

⁃ Hand sanitizer & wipes

⁃ Erasers
