To better reflect the organization’s core programming, Kendall Whittier Main Street Board of Directors released an updated mission statement and core values this month.

Kendall Whittier Main Street’s new mission statement is that KWMS works with businesses, property owners and community partners to create vibrancy in Kendall Whittier’s commercial areas.

While the organization’s core programming and focuses have not changed, the updated mission statement better reflects the work and goals of the organization.

“We had last reviewed and updated mission statement in 2014,” said Josh Kunkel, Board President and owner of Method. “A lot has changed both internally and externally in those eight years, so the Board thought it was a time for a refresh.”

In addition to a new mission statement, the Board of Directors approved a list of seven core values of Kendall Whittier Main Street. Those are:

  • Cultural Diversity / Inclusion(welcoming to all, celebrating different cultures)
  • Support Local(locally-owned businesses vs chains)
  • Creativity / Craftmanship(artists, artisans, food, brewery, creative offices)
  • Respect the History(know and promote it as asset, value Route 66 history)
  • Accessible / Affordable(multiple price points for diversity of businesses)
  • Respect the District(care for the greater good, neighboring businesses & residents)
  • Value Partnerships (organizations, property owners, business owners)

“These values are what we as a board look at and consider when we develop programs, events and services,” Kunkel said. “They’re our guiding post moving forward.”

Kendall Whittier Main Street is a nonprofit organization that supports businesses and property owners in Kendall Whittier, hosts events to bring people to the district and works closely with local and state liaisons for improvements.
