Kendall Whittier is kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month with a cultural festival, market and concert celebration.
Los Festivales y Mercados: Día de la Independencia is set from 3-8 p.m. Sept. 16 in Whittier Square parking lot at the corner of Admiral and Lewis. The event is free and open to the public. It features a vendor market, music and performances, a free Kids’ Zone and other fun activities.
“Día de la Independencia is an always popular one in Kendall Whittier,” said Jessica Jackson Seay, executive director of Kendall Whittier Main Street, the event host. “In addition to our awesome vendors, we have a great time with dancing, free lotería and amazing performances! This year, we even have an educational element.”
Día de la Independencia celebrates Independence Day for Mexico, which falls on the event date of Sept. 16, as well as for six other Latin American countries that celebrate independence the same time frame. These countries include Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua that have a Sept. 15 Independence Day and Chile, which celebrates on Sept. 18.
To learn about the different countries and to have a little fun, a free Country Scavenger Hunt will take place between 3-6:30 p.m. The hunt will take you to different Kendall Whittier businesses to find a country’s flag and scan a QR code learn about that country. The business will stamp your “passport.” Completed passports will be entered to win a prize basket. Pick up your free passport, and turn in completed ones, at the KWMS Info Booth at the festival.
In all, 20 vendors are expected. This multicultural set of vendors includes handmade jewelry, clothing and accessories, arts and crafts, plus food and treats.
On stage, Mariachi Tulsa will play from 3:15-4 p.m., while Ballet Folklorico Xóchitl will perform traditional dances from 5-5:45 p.m.
A few games of lotería will start at 4:15 p.m. and 6 p.m. Lotería, a type of Mexican bingo, is free to participate in. It is for all ages and will be conducted in Spanish and English.
The night will end with Latin-funk fusion band Brujo Roots from 6:45-8 p.m. Brujo Roots brings a dance party atmosphere with elements of samba, blue, jazz and even reggae. Dancing is encouraged.
Additionally, there will be a free Kids Zone sponsored by Gilcrease Museum.
Día de la Independencia is the final event in a three-part cultural series called Los Festivales y Mercados. The series is designed to highlight Hispanic heritage and culture, and to support local entrepreneurs, artists and vendors.
“Los Festivales y Mercados is a wonderful series we host to showcase Hispanic culture and give our Hispanic and Latinx residents an opportunity to engage with culturally-appropriate music and activities,” Jackson Seay said. “Most importantly, it fosters entrepreneurship and a sense of place.”

K-Dub inaugura el Mes de la Hispanidad con una celebración cultural
Kendall Whittier da el pistoletazo de salida al Mes de la Herencia Hispana con la celebración de un festival cultural, un mercado y un concierto.
Los Festivales y Mercados: Día de la Independencia se celebrará de 3 a 8 p.m. en el estacionamiento de Whittier Square, en la esquina de Admiral y Lewis. El evento es gratuito y abierto al público. Cuenta con un mercado de vendedores, música y actuaciones, una Zona Infantil gratuita y otras actividades divertidas.

El Día de la Independencia celebra el Día de la Independencia de México, que tiene lugar el 16 de septiembre, así como el de otros seis países latinoamericanos que celebran su independencia en la misma fecha. Estos países son Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua, que celebran su independencia el 15 de septiembre, y Chile, que lo hace el 18 de septiembre.
Para aprender sobre los diferentes países y divertirse un poco, se llevará a cabo una búsqueda del tesoro gratuita entre las 3 y las 6:30 p.m. La búsqueda te llevará a diferentes negocios de Kendall Whittier para encontrar la bandera de un país y escanear un código QR para aprender sobre ese país. El negocio sellará tu “pasaporte”. Los pasaportes completados participarán para ganar una cesta de premios. Recoge tu pasaporte gratis, y entrega los completados, en la caseta de información de KWMS en el festival.
En total, se esperan 20 vendedores. Este conjunto multicultural de vendedores incluye joyería hecha a mano, ropa y accesorios, arte y artesanía, además de comida y golosinas.
En el escenario, el Mariachi Tulsa tocará de 3:15 a 4 p.m., mientras que el Ballet Folklórico Xóchitl interpretará danzas tradicionales de 5 a 5:45 p.m.
A las 16.15 y a las 18.00 horas comenzarán unas partidas de lotería, un tipo de bingo mexicano en el que se puede participar gratuitamente. Es para todas las edades y se desarrollará en español e inglés.
La noche terminará con el grupo de fusión latina-funk Brujo Roots, de 18.45 a 20.00. Brujo Roots aporta un ambiente de fiesta bailable con elementos de samba, blue, jazz e incluso reggae. Se anima a bailar.
Además, habrá una Zona Infantil gratuita patrocinada por el Museo Gilcrease.
El Día de la Independencia es el último acto de una serie cultural de tres partes llamada Los Festivales y Mercados. El objetivo de esta serie es poner de relieve la herencia y la cultura hispanas y apoyar a los empresarios, artistas y vendedores locales.
