Tulsans will celebrate diversity and cultural inclusion during a Cultural Celebration in Kendall Whittier on Sept. 7.

The third annual Cultural Celebration, which honors Mexican Independence Day later in September, is part of the bimonthly Mercado on Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Whittier Square at the corner of Admiral and Lewis.

The event features traditional dancing, along with music, food and the vendors traditionally at Mercado. A free Kids Zone will include face painting, kids activities, a bounce house and art. It is free and open to the public.

“Community unites us,” said Jessica Jackson, director of Kendall Whittier Main Street, the event’s host. “This is an opportunity to celebrate our fellow Tulsans, their heritage and the diversity that makes our city wonderful.”

Mercado vendors generally sell wares from various regions of Mexico and other Latin American countries as well as art and crafts made right here in Tulsa. Mercado happens on the first and third Saturdays of the month from May through October. Vendors with goods from all over the globe are invited to participate.

“This event basically an enhanced version of our regular Mercado, which happens twice a month on a smaller scale,” Jackson explained.

The first scheduled performance will begin at 12:30 p.m. featuring Ballet Folklórico Tonatiuh Dance Company followed by Danza Santa Cruz at 2 p.m. Both troupes are local to Tulsa.

Additionally, guests can participate in lotería, a traditional Mexican game of chance similar to bingo. Prizes will be given out to winners throughout the event. Three sets of two games will play, starting at noon, 1:15 p.m. and 2:45 p.m.

Various food options will be available to attendees as well, including a fruit food truck, tamales, burritos and Venezuelan empanadas. Calaveras Mexican Grill, located just across the street from the event, will have a full brunch and lunch menu in addition an event exclusive $1 street taco.

A photo booth inside “Lucille,” a 1971 Shasta Camper, will be onsite to commemorate the day. The booth is managed by Dragonfly Road
