Kendall Whittier After Five this month is focused on a special kind of VIP guest – four-legged furry friends – for the first Bark in the (Popup) Park on June 10 from 5-9 p.m.
On the second Thursday of every month for After Five, volunteers lay 2,400 square feet of astroturf, creating a “pop up park” in the Whittier Square parking lot at the corner of Admiral and Lewis. The event is free and open to the public.
“At its core, After Five is an outdoor concert series,” explained Jessica Jackson Seay, executive director of Kendall Whittier Main Street. “But it’s also just a fun night to gather in the community and enjoy a summer evening the whole family – dogs included!”
In 2021, each After Five features a different theme to create some diversity in entertainment and activities.
“Bark in the Park is, of course, all about the dogs,” said Sydney Alison, community engagement coordinator. “Kendall Whittier is such a dog friendly district, so it only makes sense for us to host Bark in the Park. I have a Frenchie who will be very excited to make some new friends at the event!”
Casii Stephan and the Midnight Sun will perform from 7-9 p.m. as the headlining activity. Stephan’s soulful voice has been a hit at Kendall Whittier events in the past as the band performs stunning originals and great covers.
To kick off the night, Kendall Whittier Main Street will be hosting a Funky Tricks Exhibition. Any human can enter themselves and their pooch in the exhibition and show off their funniest, funkiest tricks. The crowd favorite will win a prize!
The Exhibition will begin at 6 p.m. Participants are encouraged to sign up in advance online as participation will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Puppy Haven Rescue will be at the event from 6:30-8 p.m. with a number of adoptable pups ready to join a loving family.
A 36-foot-by-36-foot fence by Aimright Temporary Site Services will provide a small off-leash area for pups to play. Humans must stay with their dogs while in the off-leash area.
The pop up park provides a place for attendees to sit and listen to the music or other entertainment. Guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets but some chairs will be provided.
The “park” is created with astroturf. A separate “Potty Stop” will be located across the event on grass.
“Since events with animals can be a bit hectic, we ask that guests bring dogs that are comfortable with other dogs as well as other humans,” Jackson Seay said. “Dogs should also remain on leash at all times, except in the designated off-leash area.”
Marshall Brewing Company will be selling beer selections at the event, and there will be a free Kids Zone for the younger guests. A special “Friends” VIP access tent will be on site for Friends of Kendall Whittier, with complementary beverages available.
Pollos Asados al Carbon, a food truck behind She Brews Coffee House, will be open serving up tacos, gorditas and other goodies, on Thursday until 10 p.m.
Other After Five events this year include: Kids Night (July 8), Comedy Night (August 12), Salsa Night (September 9) and TU Night (October 14).
After Five is made possible through a sponsorship by Fowler Automotive.
