The Lawyers of Kendall Whittier opened in May of this year and immediately got to work helping build stronger communities by serving the diverse legal needs of our neighbors in and beyond Kendall Whittier. We got with one of the main founders, Lorena Rivas, to discuss more about the firm and the challenges and excitements about owning a business.
For some context, tell us about The Lawyers of Kendall Whittier.
We are a law firm that serve the legal needs of our community. We help people with their immigration, criminal and family law problems.
How did you get started? Who are the lawyers behind the firm?
The three main founders of the firm are Lorena Rivas, Sarah Schmook and Mary McMillen. We all met at the University of Tulsa College of Law, also a member of the Kendall Whittier neighborhood.
What is something you wish your clients knew about the firm?
The mission of our firm is to empower our clients as they navigate the legal system and become integral members of our community. All the founding members of the firm became lawyers because the legal system at one time or another played a pivotal part in our life and desire to become lawyers. Because we personally have dealt with the legal system, we want to ensure that our clients have a good experience as much as possible.
What is the hardest part about owning your own business?
Being able to wear all the numerous hats of owning a business—administrator, lawyer, marketing director, sales manager, accounts manager and even custodian. There is never enough time for it all!
But there are some perks, too, right? What do you love about it?
Being able to dictate the direction and image of the business.
As your name reflect, you love Kendall Whittier. What are two KW businesses you’d recommend to your clients and why?
918 Coffee and Pancho Anaya. I love these businesses!
918 Coffee – There is no better Chai in Tulsa than in 918 Coffee. Any free hours I have, I will go to 918 to do work. It doesn’t feel like work when you are drinking Chai and listening to smooth coffee music.
Pancho Anaya Bakery – And well, Pancho Anaya has the best pastries in town and the friendliest smiles.
