TFA Drafts & Design: Architectural Collage with Taryn Singleton

August 4, 2022 @ 6:30 pm

TFA Drafts & Design: Architectural Collage at American Solera with Taryn Singleton
$50 | $37.50 | Workshop starts at 6:30 PM | Thursday, August 4, 2022
Collage has become one of the most powerful narrative techniques in architectural drawing. The wide-ranging medium mixes references and connections to culture, context and place. As an architectural tool, collage has been used both to imagine surreal spaces and as a conceptual element of planning. But it is more than an aesthetic — it is also a way to create a more inclusive design process.
Collage comes from the Greek word kolla meaning “glue.” As representation is its own type of project, collages are used to convey multi-layered atmospheres through drawing. Like glue, they bring fragments of images, sketches, patterns, materials and textures together. In turn, they define architectural and spatial concepts. Collages can be used for generating new ideas, to represent projects, or as part of the design method and process itself. The central idea is defined as a work of representation made with various different materials combined or collected together. Integrating visual and physical elements, the result is usually a quicker and more iterative way to explore and translate design ideas.
In this workshop, you’ll choose from a variety of black and white architectural photographic reproduction of Tulsa to use as the base for a one of a kind collage design. You’ll embellish your chosen 8.5 x 11 photograph with a variety of decorative papers, magazine cuttings, etc. All supplies are included and after the workshop you’ll take home an original work of architectural art to enjoy for years to come.

ABOUT FACILITATOR, TARYN SINGLETON: Taryn Singleton received her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Arts with a minor in Women and Gender Studies from the College of Charleston in and her MFA in Painting with a minor in Printmaking from The University of Tulsa here in Tulsa, OK. She teaches art full time and exhibits regionally with a wide variety of works ranging from paintings, prints and collages to embroideries that are all connected by her perspective of the world around her.
Her education and philosophy can be seen as she studies life, paralleling it in her visual expression. In her pieces, at times abstract and conceptual, she explores ambiguous spaces in the world. She is particularly concerned with the intersection (or lack thereof) between the masculine and feminine, as well as systematic inequality and different power dynamics in a post-structuralist world. Each question drives artistic decision and evolves as she crafts her narrative into a tangible craft.
Singleton describes it as “creating [an] invented landscape” which she then navigates in all aspects of her pieces such as line, color, shape, pattern, and “the cultivation of accidents.” Her observations of the external world merge with her internal thought processes and become a new creation that continue her discussion of ambiguity.
