Ang Lee’s historic and award-winning film about the love between two American cowboys will be followed two weeks later by the Tulsa premiere of “Beyond Brokeback,” a live theatre event directed by Vern Stefanic, featuring music and staged readings of people – gay and straight – whose lives were dramatically changed by watching the film.
“Beyond Brokeback” play event will be performed at Lynn Riggs Theatre at the Dennis R Neill Equality Center: Thurs-Sat, 10/28-10/30. (At every movie screening look for a discounted coupon that you may use for the play event.)
Both the film and subsequent, complementary play are designed to spotlight LGBTQ+ History Month in Tulsa.
About the film: In 1963, rodeo cowboy Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and ranch hand Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) are hired by rancher Joe Aguirre (Randy Quaid) as sheep herders in Wyoming. One night on Brokeback Mountain, Jack makes a drunken pass at Ennis that is eventually reciprocated. Though Ennis marries his longtime sweetheart, Alma (Michelle Williams), and Jack marries a fellow rodeo rider (Anne Hathaway), the two men keep up their tortured and sporadic affair over the course of 20 years. Academy Award Winner – Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay.
