As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continue to encourage social distancing in the midst of the global pandemic known as COVID-19, also referred to as the coronavirus, many locally-owned and operated businesses are closed or limiting services.

This, however, proves to be a hardship for several small businesses and their employees. The following are ways you can help without putting yourself at risk.

This list may be updated as new information becomes available.

General Support

  • Show support of your favorite local businesses by writing reviews! Review a business with Google, Facebook, Yelp, Next Door and elsewhere. Be sure to write what you love about the business, what products are offered and if you have a go-to item you get. Specifics will help others feel more connected to the business, so mention something silly like how much you love the owner’s hair or that the name of the shop dog who always greets you.
  • Like, comment and share social media posts. While it may not seem like much, due to algorithms, it allows more people to see the post, helping the business advertise for less. Interacting with businesses also lets the owners know you haven’t forgotten about them and will be a regular, valued customer once again soon.
  • Buy gift cards from your favorite businesses. (Some available online) Gift cards provide for an influx of cash to the business now and use the services later when things are back to normal. They also make great gifts, so stock up for future birthdays or special occasions!
  • Shop online or call ahead for pick up. Several businesses already had or have developed online presences. Use online portals to purchase goods to have them shipped directly to you or available for pick up.
