Think & Drink: Developing New Battery Technology

February 13, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Speaker: Dr. Edith Newton Wilson
Topic: 2020 Vision: Developing New Battery Technology with a Low-Carbon Supply Chain

As we embrace a future economy built on affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, we must adopt low-carbon mining techniques and sustainable development and building practices. The now-traditional lithium ion battery has fallen in cost such that new wind-solar-storage projects are the utility choice over natural gas in the United States and abroad. Innovations in battery design and components are improving productivity, driving costs lower, and creating demand for new metals in addition to the lithium and cobalt already flooding existing battery supply chains. As energy professionals, business owners, and Earth citizens, it’s up to us to ensure that the supply chain we develop to support these new technologies drives the carbon budget to zero and maintains the environmental and social integrity of extraction and built sites.
